Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 6, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how docu(“we,” “us”) handles information when you use the docu website and tools (the “Service”). We've tried to keep it plain and honest.
The short version
Your documents never leave your device. The PDF you upload is opened, analyzed, and repaired entirely inside your own web browser. We do not transmit, receive, or store the contents of your documents on our servers. You can verify this by opening your browser's network tab, or by working offline after the page loads.
We do collect a limited amount of information needed to run accounts, enforce free and paid usage, and improve the tool. That is described below.
Information we collect
Your documents
Processed locally in your browser and not sent to us. A copy of your in-progress file may be stored temporarily in your own browser's local storage so you can pick up where you left off; it stays on your device and you can clear it at any time.
Account information
If you create an account or sign in, we and our authentication provider process your name, email address, and a sign-in identifier (for example, your Google account identifier if you use Google sign-in). We use this to identify you, secure your account, and contact you about the Service.
Fix metadata (not document contents)
When you download a repaired file, we record non-content information tied to your account: the court profile you selected, the categories of issues found and fixed, file sizes, and timestamps. We use this to operate usage limits and billing and to decide which courts to support next. We do not record the text or contents of your document.
Payment information
If you make a purchase, payment is handled by our third-party payment processor. We do not receive or store your full card details; we may receive limited billing metadata such as a customer identifier and subscription status.
Technical and usage data
Like most websites, our hosting and infrastructure providers may automatically log technical data such as IP address, browser type, and request times, for security and reliability. We use strictly necessary cookies (for example, to keep you signed in).
How we use information
- To provide, secure, and maintain the Service.
- To manage accounts and enforce free and paid usage limits.
- To process payments and prevent fraud and abuse.
- To improve the tool and expand court coverage.
- To communicate with you about the Service, and to comply with law.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. California residents therefore have nothing to opt out of on that basis, and retain the other rights described below.
Legal bases (EEA/UK)
If you are in the European Economic Area or the UK, we process your information on these bases: to perform our contract with you (providing accounts and the Service); our legitimate interests (securing, maintaining, and improving the Service and preventing abuse); your consent (where we ask for it, such as optional communications); and compliance with legal obligations. Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time.
Service providers
We share limited information only with providers that help us run the Service, under their own privacy commitments:
- Authentication (sign-in and account management).
- Google, if you choose to sign in with Google.
- Payment processing.
- Database hosting for account and metadata.
- Website hosting and infrastructure.
Legal and other disclosures
We may disclose your information if we believe in good faith that doing so is necessary to comply with a law, regulation, or valid request from a public authority; to enforce our terms; to detect, prevent, or address fraud, security, or technical issues; or to protect the rights, property, or safety of our users, the public, or us. If we are ever involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction, and we will note any such change here.
Data retention
We keep account and metadata for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service and meet legal obligations. You can ask us to delete your account and associated data (see below).
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export your personal information, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to withdraw consent. California residents have rights under the CCPA/CPRA, and residents of the EU/UK have rights under the GDPR. To exercise any right, email us at hello@heydocu.com. We aim to respond to verified requests within the time required by applicable law (generally 30 to 45 days), and we will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. Keeping document processing on your device is itself a core part of our approach.
Children
The Service is not directed to children and is not intended for anyone under 16. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
International data transfers
Your information may be stored and processed in the United States and in other countries where we or our service providers operate, which may have data-protection laws different from those where you live. By using the Service, you consent to your information being transferred to and processed in those locations. We take reasonable steps to protect it wherever it is handled.
Changes
We may update this policy. The “Last updated” date reflects the current version; material changes will be reflected here.
